A naked woman who was suspected of being impaired by the drug spice trashed an Anchorage Subway Tuesday night.

Anchorage Police received the report around 7:30 pm that employees witnessed a woman enter the east Anchorage restaurant, disrobe, and proceed to break computers, rip down ceiling tiles and spray a fire extinguisher.

She was taken into custody by officers and transported to a local hospital.

Kenai Peninsula resident Jessica Burch has created a group to increase the awareness of the damaging effects of that designer drug.

Burch: “In Anchorage you hear and see on TV, it seems like it’s targeted by Beans Cafe and it’s just this special type of people that are using this stuff and it’s not.”

Burch organized the October 4 protest to raise awareness of spice locally.

She says while she used spice she saw how the symptoms of its addiction can be easily mistaken for other things and believes that is why people do not see the problem in the community.

Burch: “When I was diagnosed with pneumonia because I kept going to the hospital for breathing problems because I was smoking spice and I couldn’t breathe. I didn’t tell the doctor that I was smoking spice because I was embarrassed and so they just diagnose you off of what they know.”

Burch is now pursuing the education to become an addiction counsellor in the community with an emphasis on designer drugs like spice.
