The Alaska Legislature is considering discontinuing their Anchorage office building lease next year in order to save the state about $4 million.
The legislative council says an obscure clause in the lease would permit the state to get out of the lease if the funds for the rent is not in the budget.
That means lawmakers would simply not include that $4 million into this year’s budget.
Another option being considered is possibly moving into cheaper space like the Robert B. Atwood building on 7th, the same building as one of Governor Bill Walker’s office locations.
Next month, lawmakers will meet behind closed doors to talk about the issue.
