Alaskans Celebrating “Walter J. Hickel day of the Arctic”

Today marks the birthday the late former Gov. Wally Hickel. The state legislature earlier this year, designated August 18 as “Walter J Hickel day of the Arctic.

Hickel passed away two years ago and today would’ve marked his 93rd birthday.

Hickel was first elected governor in 1966 , and later resigned to become the Interior Secretary under the Nixon administration but, resigned after a falling out with the president. He second term as governor in the 1990s.
