The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has annouced the opening of drift gillnetting in Drift Gillnet Area 1 and in the Kenai and Kasilof Sections of the Upper Subdistrict (the regular corridor, not the expanded corridor) on Saturday, July 14, 2012 from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Test fish indices in both the Anchor Point and North Kalgin Island offshore test fish projects indicate a significant number of sockeye salmon moving into the southern part of Upper Cook Inlet and in the waters between Kalgin Island and the eastern shore. Because set gillnetting in the Upper Subdistrict remains closed at this time for king salmon conservation, this fishing period is intended to primarily harvest sockeye salmon bound for the Kenai and Kasilof Rivers, while reducing the harvest of northern-bound sockeye salmon.
