5pm and Buccaneer’s Still in Homer

Another deadline has passed on Buccaneer’s planned departure from Homer. Due to strong winds and bad weather, the jack-up rig the Endeavour didn’t leave today at 3pm. Instead, according to the Office of the Harbormaster in Homer, they’ll likely be heading out tomorrow morning or shortly thereafter.

We recently spoke with Deputy Harbormaster Matt Clarke about why the deadline was set…

Clarke: “And we have a window or deadline that we have to meet as far as the federal requirements for driving pilings in coastal areas, so the construction activity is not detrimental to the spawning salmon or the smolt that are released from estuaries during those months. So, we have a construction deadline that we are trying to meet.”
