ASAA 2A State Volleyball Championships @ Dimond High School
The Cook Inlet Academy Eagles, champions of the Borealis Conference, claimed third place with a 23-25, 25-21, 17-25, 25-22, 15-9 win over 2010 state champion New Stuyakok on Saturday at the 2A state volleyball championships. Kelsie Leaf and Nicole Moffis were selected to the 2A All-Tournament Team.
First Round: The Eagles girls defeated Kalskag 3-1. Cook Inlet dropped the opening game of the match 21-25; then controled the match with three-straight wins 25-21, 25-19 and 27-25. Kelsie Leaf was selected CIA Player of the Game.
ASAA 1-2-3A State Wrestling Championships @ Nikiski High School
Nikiski High School, the host site for the state small-school wrestling championships, finished third in the team scoring behind staqte champion Bethel and runner-up Dillingham. The Bulldogs finished only 1.5 points behind Dillingham in the team scoring. Nikiski and Skyview, from the Denali/Kachemak Conference, qualified 11 and 9 wrestlers, respectively to the state tournament.
Bethel wrestled to the 2011 1-2-3A team title on the strength of two individual champions and 188 team points.
Nikiski amassed 150 points and crowned two individual champions. Kaden Spurgeon (152) and Lincoln Johnson (182), both conference champions, won individual state titles for the Bulldogs. Corey Green paced second at 160 pounds; Henry Eide, third at 285; Dakota Neely, fourth at 113; Josh Brown, fourth at 145; and Tylor Handley, fifth at 113 pounds.
Skyview placed eighth in the team scoring lead by Alez Rodriguez’s third place at 182 pounds; Sam Janorske, fourth at 132; and Jon Alexander, fourth at 285 pounds.
